Flying High – A Video Editing Trip To Stunning Milan
Last month, though, Little Bird Emma had a video editing job that took her all the way to Italy! Here, she tells us all about it…
Today is “Read A Book Day” and we’re more than happy to curl up with a good page-turner! But without beautiful book design, we’re not going to stay glued to our latest read. With the rise of self-publishing, anyone can become an author, but the path to print success can be tricky to navigate. Thankfully, if you’ve got a story to tell, we’re on hand to help bring it to life!
If, like us, you were a big reader as a child, you probably have fond memories of the pictures from your story books.
We all know the phrase “don’t judge a book by its cover,” but let’s be honest… If the cover illustration doesn’t appeal to a child, they’re not likely to pick the book up at all!
From bright, modern graphics to classic watercolour pictures, we specialise in child-friendly design and illustration. So, if you’re a budding children’s writer, why not get in touch?
Layout design can be key to a book’s success. All of the text needs to be in a legible font, with plenty of contrast between the colour of the font and the page. Text shouldn’t be put on top of a busy background, unless it has a solid or semi-opaque box around it to help it stand out.
Think about the reader’s journey through your book. If it’s a simple story, there’s only one order for the content to go, but if it’s a non-fiction book, think about whether the order you’re putting things in makes logical sense. If a reader is confused early on, they’re not likely to hang around to the last page to see if things get better!
The old saying that “everyone has a story in them” might well be true, but actually writing it down is a whole other matter!
Above all, keep it clear. Don’t meander away from the subject, keep things grammatically correct and try to avoid the use of colloquialisms. You might know what a phrase specific to your home town means, but there’s no guarantee that a reader hundreds – or even thousands – of miles away will!
As a published author herself, Little Bird Emma has a huge amount of experience when it comes to creating and editing text – both for her own projects and other people’s! So, if your writing needs to be given a once-over, she’s your girl!
Illustration, layout and copywriting may well apply to the world of self-publishing, but we don’t just use our skills on book design!
From welcome packs and leaflets, to museum exhibit panels, we’re here to get people reading your stories, however you choose to tell them.
